The same reverence we once gave to God, we are now giving to other thrones, and the trade is changing the soul of the American Church.
Awe has not disappeared from American life. It has been redirected. The institutions, agencies, and voices that hold the country's attention now receive a religious weight that used to belong to the holiness of God. The Church watches it happen on its own platform and rarely names it.
Education: Schools are claiming pastoral authority over children's most intimate identity formation and treating parents as a threat to be excluded.
Government: The State is addressed with the trust that belongs only to the Lord, sometimes draped in Christian language, and many believers cannot tell the difference.
Church: Ministry leaders weigh the verdict of culture more carefully than the verdict of Scripture, and call it wisdom.
This is not a political problem. It is a worship problem.
WHAT WE’RE WATCHING
Education: California Schools, Parents, and the Gender Disclosure Ruling
In March 2026, the Supreme Court issued an emergency 6-3 ruling blocking California's law (AB 1955) that required public school teachers to use students' preferred names and pronouns and forbade them from telling parents about their child's social transition at school without the student's consent. The lawsuit was brought first by Catholic teachers on free-speech and religious-liberty grounds, then joined by parents who said the law severed their authority over their own children's upbringing. A federal district judge sided with the teachers and parents; the 9th Circuit put that ruling on hold; the Supreme Court intervened on an emergency basis. The litigation continues.

Government: Federal Operations Adopt Religious Posture
CNN reported on February 15, 2026 that the Trump administration has introduced systematic religious practices into federal operations, including Christian prayer at advisory board meetings, weekly national prayer encouragement, and Bible verses on official government social media accounts. Christian symbols and Christian language are being attached to State authority across multiple agencies. The pattern is ongoing and expanding.

Church: America's Pastor Pipeline Is Collapsing
David Easterwood serves as director of the St. Paul field office of U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement. He also serves as pastor at Cities Church in St. Paul, Minnesota. The dual role has drawn scrutiny from observers who question whether a church leader can hold state enforcement authority and spiritual pastoral authority simultaneously without compromising both. The case is one visible instance of a broader pattern: church leaders taking seats inside government power structures and presenting it as Kingdom faithfulness.

THE WORD
"Do not fear those who can kill the body but cannot kill the soul. Rather, fear him who can destroy both soul and body in hell."

Fear, in Scripture, is not anxiety. It is reverence. It is the response of a small creature standing before a vast and holy God whose glory could undo it in a single word. The fear of the Lord is the worship that belongs to His weight alone.
The Church has not stopped giving that posture. It has transferred it. The same reverence once reserved for the omnipotence of God is now given to the State, the curriculum, the cultural verdict, and the platforms that hand out approval and punishment. Christ's question in Matthew 10 is not about courage. It is about who is really God.
A Church that no longer fears God will always fear culture. The throne is never vacant. The trembling found a different altar.
THE DECISION
There is a cost to clarity. To name the redirected reverence is to lose the approval of people who believe they are being faithful, and to stand apart in a room that is already bowing.
"Whoever loves father or mother more than me is not worthy of me, and whoever loves son or daughter more than me is not worthy of me." (Matthew 10:37)
The American Church has not lost its capacity for reverence. It has redirected it. And it is calling that redirection wisdom, balance, sensitivity, and relevance.
When power puts on the clothes of faith, some call it revival. But a State draped in the cross is still not the Kingdom. We do not serve a God of any government. We serve the God of the universe.
Undivided is not where you start. It is where you keep choosing. Be vigilant. Stay strong.
Neutrality is not available. You will give your awe to something today.
You cannot fear both.
THE CHARGE
Recover your sight.
Read Scripture until the One on the page becomes too large to ignore. Worship until His presence weighs more than the news. Pray until His omnipotence is more real than the power of the State.
If you give your reverence to the lesser throne, you will walk from the only One who would not walk from you.
You were not made to bow to culture.
